The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet (BFB) explores the timeless myth of Carmen in its new project. This reimagining of Bizet's work introduces new elements of flamenco that have been previously unknown. It transcends the traditional concept within which it has historically been classified and adapts it to the reality of today's modern society. The values that make Carmen a woman of our time, and the adaptation of the music and flamenco ballet with a signature inscription by David Gutiérrez, place the work in a new paradigm of universal myth and 21st-century flamenco.
Despite the passage of time, Carmen retains its message of freedom and courage in the face of an unequal world where women still struggle for their rights. Carmen is the prototype of a woman confronted by a hostile and cruel male world, from which she does not survive, but leaves her example for posterity.
Carmen is pain, passion, and a cry for freedom—feelings that flamenco art masterfully presents in their most savage and primitive form. BFB tells the story written by Prosper Mérimée, delving into the love affair between the gypsy Carmen and the bullfighter Escamillo. Here, the language of flamenco proves the best means of artistically expressing emotions and the perfect common thread for conveying the protagonists' passion.
The show combines the most contemporary flamenco singing with original music. Opera singing and Bizet's music combine the most traditional sounds with innovative touches of jazz and flamenco singing. The choreography blends the universes of flamenco ballet with striking tap dancing and the fresh air of contemporary dance.
