Barcelona Flamenco Ballet (BFB)

with the program “CARMEN”

(composer Georges Bizet, who took as a basis the plot of the novel of the same name by the French writer Prosper Merimet)

Barcelona Flamenco Ballet (BFB) addresses the eternal myth of Carmen in its new project. This new recreation of Georges Bizet's work introduces new flamenco elements that were previously unknown. It goes beyond the traditional concept in which it has historically been classified and adapts it to the realities of modern society. The values by which Carmen is a woman of our time today, and the adaptation of flamenco music and ballet with the distinctive imprint that characterizes David Gutierrez, place the work in a new paradigm of universal myth and flamenco of the 21st century.
Even though time has passed, Carmen retains her message of freedom and courage in the face of an unequal world where women are still fighting for their rights. Carmen is the prototype of a woman who is faced with a hostile and violent male world in which she does not survive, but leaves her example for posterity. Carmen is pain, passion and a cry for freedom, feelings that flamenco art masterfully represents in its wildest and most primitive aspect.

"BFB" tells a story written by Prosper Merime, delving into the love affair between gypsy Carmen and bullfighter Escamillo. Here, too, flamenco language is the best means of artistic expression for expressing emotions and an ideal driving force for conveying the passion of the main characters.

Merime's characters, Bizet's music and BFB's flamenco merge into a show open to the public today. Fans of opera, flamenco, dance, music, theater and the performing arts in general will discover a new aesthetic landmark in this Carmen, where the mixing of cultures and feelings will open the doors to the art of the 21st century.

With Carmen's help, the Flamenco Ballet of Barcelona wants to pay tribute to Prosper Merima and his relationship with Spain and, in particular, with Barcelona. He knew the city, spoke Catalan and even the language of the Kalo gypsies. For its ties to Barcelona, for its love of diversity and the mixing of cultures, BFB feels indebted to the brilliant author Prosper Merima.
