The story of “Smokie“ and ”Spirit of Smokie"
Born in the early sixties in Bradford, England, school friends Ron Kelly, Chris Norman, Alan Silson and Terry Uttley formed their first line-up. After several recording contracts and a name change, the name "Smokie" was chosen. This marked a period of worldwide success for the band (Pete Spencer replaced Ron Kelly on drums), whose records have now sold over 30 million copies.
In 1986, the band played their last concert, and Chris Norman began a successful solo career. This paved the way for a new Smokie look featuring the two original members. Dean's father, vocalist Alan Barton, joined them. Alan's voice, energy and commitment to success have restored the Smokie name as a worldwide touring and recording band.
Unfortunately, in March 1995, tragedy struck when Alan Barton was killed in a motorway accident in Kolonga, Germany.
1996 brought the third incarnation of "Smokie" with the remaining original member Terry Uttley.
Alan Silson left to later form his own band with members of Spirit of Smokie, including the original Ron Kelly, Andy Whelan and Graham Kearns.
In March 2008, Alan Barton's memorial concert was held under the direction of his son Dean Barton, and thus the "Spirit of Smokie" was born.
Dean Barton's undeniable voice in "Smokie" and his stage charisma complemented what is now a recognized world-class band.
New material: Despite being known at concerts for the sound of the original seventies band, the concert success of "My Baby" in Europe led to constant public requests for more original material.: This led to the release of the new album "Changes" under the label title "Barton".
